Residents of Lingampally village in Munipally mandal, Sangareddy district, have raised a loud alarm over what they describe as illegal dumping of chemical waste on a piece of land leased close to NH-65, right beside two residential educational institutions and active agricultural fields.
An unidentified chemical company has been bringing the waste in drums from outside the area and offloading it at the site for the past several months. Since there are no chemical companies in Lingampally or its surrounding areas, villagers say the waste is clearly being transported from elsewhere.
The consequences have been serious. Staff and students at the Residential Junior College and School nearby say hostel inmates have fallen ill multiple times over recent months, with the foul smell from the site regularly spreading across the area. Whenever it rains, the chemical waste flows directly into neighbouring agricultural fields, raising fears about crop damage and soil contamination.
When residents approached the staff posted at the dump yard and the drivers of the vehicles bringing the waste, they were refused any response. Ward member Anasuya, who owns land close to the site, alleged that the staff even attempted to physically threaten residents who questioned the illegal dumping. A complaint filed with the panchayat secretary has yielded no action so far.
Local leader Ramesh Yadav has urged the pollution control board and other concerned departments to visit Lingampally immediately, inspect the site, and take firm action against those responsible. He demanded that the chemical waste be removed from the location permanently.
