Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad is seeing a sharp spike in young patients arriving with flu-like symptoms, putting paediatric emergency and outpatient wards under considerable pressure.
Children are coming in with high fever, persistent coughs, headaches, and body aches. Close to 100 admissions are being recorded each day, with younger children bearing the brunt of complications such as viral pneumonia and respiratory distress.
Senior paediatricians at the state-run hospital say changing weather conditions and elevated humidity levels are driving a rapid rise in seasonal influenza and H1N1-like viral infections across the city.
Doctors are sounding an urgent note for parents. Children who show prolonged high temperatures, persistent vomiting, or any difficulty breathing should be taken to a hospital without delay, physicians said. The early days of a fever are considered especially critical, and medical staff have cautioned strongly against self-medication during this period.
Families are also being advised to follow basic preventive steps: regular handwashing, keeping sick children away from school, and wearing masks in crowded public spaces. Doctors say these measures can meaningfully slow transmission during the current seasonal spike.
